Buddha, Dhamma and Sangha

Learning outcomes Name the Three Refuges and describe the introductory meaning of each. The Three Refuges, also called the Triple Gem, are Buddha, Dhamma and Sangha. In this introductory context, Buddha refers to the awakened teacher, Dhamma to the teaching and path of practice, and Sangha to the community associated with preserving and practising the teaching. Buddhist texts also use Sangha in more specific senses; a teacher can help distinguish these usages. The lecture uses a journey as a teaching analogy: a guide, a path and companions. An analogy helps explain a relationship; it does not replace the fuller meaning of the terms. Pause and reflect What is the difference between learning about a path and putting it into practice?
